INTERPRETER PROJECT REACHES THE FIRST STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT OF MODULAR TOOLS FOR GRID PLANNING
INTERPRETER is a European Commission's
H2020 funded project (2019-2022), gathering a consortium of nine (9) high-level
partners, including DSOs, TSOs and researchers working together hand-in-hand to
design an ambitious solution.
The first stage of development of the five (5) planning tools to be integrated in the modular grid management solution developed in the INTERPRETER project is now completed. The first round of deliverables, containing the new tools' specifications and pseudocode of the software, was recently submitted to the European Commission (https://www.interpreter-h2020.eu/results/). The tools are aiming at the optimal design and planning of power system networks, focusing on the distribution grids, and include the areas of study:
- Optimal reactive power compensation, led by CIRCE
- Planned phase balancing, also led by CIRCE
- Nodal capacity allocation, led by R&D Nester
- Dispersed storage units locations optimization, also led by R&D Nester
- Environmental and economic assessment, led by CERTH.
The participation of R&D Nester focus on two main applications for grid planning:
- The nodal capacity allocation tool, which quantifies the existent margin to increase renewable generation penetration in the grid at the node level, provides a list of possible grid bottlenecks that may require reinforcement and also a probabilistic analysis on the impact of the simultaneous increase of power in all nodes;
- and The dispersed storage units locations optimization, which provides a multi-temporal techno-economical solution based in the installation of new storage devices in the grid to avoid grid congestions.
These tools support DSOs and TSOs to move from a traditional grid management approach to an active system management approach, by endowing them with an innovative modular, centralized and open-source platform providing several grid-planning services, able to overcome the challenges of the rapid deployment of distributed energy resources as well as the growing environmental concerns.
