Student co-supervised by R&D NESTER presents master's thesis on losses in the transmission of natural gas and hydrogen
On the past 21st of November, student Inês Silvestre from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) successfully presented and discussed her dissertation for obtaining a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with the theme "Power Losses in Natural Gas and Hydrogen Transmission in the Portuguese High-pressure Network". This work was co-supervised by Doctor Rui Costa Neto from IST and Eng. Ricardo Pastor from R&D NESTER.
The student's work focused on the bibliographical review on the subject, on the modeling of the Portuguese natural gas transmission network and on the development of a tool for computing the mass flow required to supply Portuguese industrial customers from Sines, calculating the associated transmission power losses. The influence of several parameters and scenarios on the operation of the RNTGN was also evaluated.
The work also included a study on the influence of hydrogen (H2) blending in the natural gas mixture at various percentages and a study on the economic viability of producing H2 for blending. It also includes an assessment of the economic impact of the blending mixture on the industrial consumers and their CO2 emissions.
